SSZ: All out of respect for the threat of … g4. And yet the centralizing 20.Qc2 (in order to guard e4) was the correct move. WSZ: Up until now, Zimmermann has manoeuvred splendidly and attained a promising position with good winning chances. With 20…Ne4!, he could now have established an imposing central army. After 21.Nc3, which Zimmermann may have feared, the combination beginning with 21…Rxh3! would follow (see the next note).
20 … Nf6-d5?
SSZ: The critical position! Black is hoping to play f7-f5, but overlooks a surprising parry. After 20…Ne4, Black would have good winning chances, for example: 20… Ne4 21.Nc3 Rxh3! 22.gxh3 Qg3+ 23.Kh1 Qxh3 24.Qc2 Ng3+ 25.Kg1 Nxf1 26.Rxf1 g4, etc.
D&R: After the game move, besides …Nxe3, …f5 is also threatened, with fortification of the centre knight.
21. e3-e4!!
D&R: With this surprising exchange sacrifice, White absolves himself of his strategic sin on his 13th move and brings honour to ‘his’ stratagem of centralization.
SSZ: After this exchange sacrifice, Black’s flank attack disintegrates into ‘single atoms’; actually what remains is merely a displaced cluster of pieces, obstructed in their freedom of movement by their obligations to protect each other, while White obtains a harmoniously assembled ‘complete centralization’ from the ‘pawn centre’ and ‘centralization of pieces’, which makes Black’s uprooted flank attack all the more unlikely to succeed. The rest is extremely instructive.
21 … Nd5-e3
22. Qd1-d2 Ne3xf1
23. Ra1xf1
SSZ: From Black’s once proud flank brigades, now only a collection pieces remains, inhibited by the obligation to protect each other, while White’s pieces threaten to become stronger and stronger in steadily progressing centralization.
23 … Nd7-f6
24. e4-e5 Nf6-d5
25. Ne2-g3 Nd5-f4
SSZ: Hoping to appease the enemy by returning the exchange.
D&R: Or 25…R5h7 26.Qxg5+ Kf8 27.Ne4 Qe7 28.Qxe7+ and Ng5.
26. Ng3xh5 Rh8xh5
27. Qd2-d1 Rh5-h6
28. Qd1-g4 Ke7-e8
29. Nh2-f3
SSZ: Of course, 29.Qxg5 fails because of 29…Nxh3+, followed by …Rg6.
29 … f7-f6
30. h3-h4 Qc7-d7
SSZ: Probably 30…Qe7 would have offered somewhat more resistance.
31. e5xf6 g7xf6
32. Rf1-e1
SSZ: A typical centralized position: the rook, queen and knight are aiming toward the middle.
32 … Qd7-h7
33. b2-b4!
SSZ: Only now can the flank attack begin!
White relies on a splendidly centralized position, soundly positioned army.
33 … a7-a6
34. a2-a4 Rh6-h5
SSZ: Black has to be careful where he moves his king, for example: 34…Kd8?
35.Nxg5 etc.
35. b4-b5! a6xb5
36. a4xb5 c6xb5
37. d4-d5
